The NFL Edge
...Is back with more 2003 PRE-SEASON projections!! NOTE: AFTER I
have seen a few PRE-SEASON NFL GAMES I will have my Official Season projection
issue.
BEFORE THAT -- For those of you who follow the NFL edge, know that we LOVE
these "meaningless" games - especially in the middle of Summer - What better
way to get tuned up for the regular season. Scroll on down and read ON!
Well the 2003 season is off to a flying start with a big opening night
victory in taking Tampa (-2.5) over the Jets in Japan. While we had KC +1.5 in
the Hall of fame game - the line shifted and had them as 3 point favorites -
the game was cancelled with KC leading 9-0. VIP SPORTS, in a very
classy move which once again reinforces why they are the BEST online
sportsbook, and the preferred partner of THE NFL Edge, refunded all BETS on
that stinker.
Despite all these so called PUNDITS crying out to stay away from pre-
season games, we just ran up our GAUDY pre-season record against the spread.
Once again we ask -- Did you GET THE EDGE??? We're at it again this week
as the pre-season features a full slate of games for this week. We will ONLY
concentrate on a few select predictions for the pre-season. However we will
have projections and predictions for EVERY REGULAR SEASON NFL GAME - right
here - TOTALLY FREE - EVERY WEEK!!

Now I might be tipping my hat a little bit here, especially in light of the
fact that our Pre-Season Spectacular is not due out for at least another week
or two. However at risk of some of you not coming back for the pre-season
spectacular, which lets face it NO ONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD DO, we will
tip our hand a little. We expect BIG things from both these two this year. The
Giants ended last season with a bitter taste in their mouths as the refs blew
the call at the end of the playoff game and sent the G-men into the offseason.
By all accounts the G-men are chomping to get back on the field and I expect a
big effort even in the pre-season. As this is the first action for them since
that game. The Pats on the other side of the ball are a year removed from
Super Bowl Champions and didn't even qualify for the playoffs last year. They
are equally primed to show the home fans that the Super Bowl run was no fluke.
As it's the first pre-season game though, and these two will be playing in the
regular season anyway - I don't expect to see too much from either team. A
series or two from the starters at most. The Pats will be taking a close look
at QB Rohan Davey, an athletic QB who can scramble and give the Giants D fits.
The Giants have a couple of guys who will be playing hard to show they belong
in the NFL - and one of them is former Heisman Trophy winner Ron Dayne. He
will be featured in this game, and determined to have a big day. Playing
against second teamers he just might.

Exclusively on The NFL
EDGE Dr. Biffs NCAA PICKS!!
While the Doc is preparing for a big 2003 season, he has
provided us with the Docs "top 25". Just a little taste for those College Ball
fans.
With fall camps about to open, the Doc has some thoughts on
the upcoming season.
1. The defense at Oklahoma might be the best defense in the
last 15 years of college football. Doc likes seven players on this defense to
play on Sundays in the near future.
2. Ron Zook won't be able to survive another 5-loss season at
Florida. Miami, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida State and LSU are all losable
games. Maybe not five losses but the Gator faithful might want to expect
three. Good news, Auburn is not on the schedule and Tennessee comes to
Gainesville.
3. With the schedule allowing no margin for error, Colorado
will sink or swim very quickly. Looking at the schedule and the history of
early season let downs, I'm thinking the former.
4. Archie Manning, good call on making sure that Eli has a
small Heisman campaign. It really won't matter when Ole Miss (politically
correct mascot and all) go 6 - 5.
5. Tennessee will be the comeback story of the year if they
can stay healthy. If I'm wrong, the pressure on Phillip Fulmer will grow to
nightmarish proportions and Casey Clausen will have left Knoxville never
having fulfilled his promise. Note the Doc hedging a bit on this one...
6. Clemson, Nebraska, Arizona and Mississippi State
will be in the hunt for a Head Coach after the 2003 season. Look for Rick
Neuheisel to hit the ground running and go after the job in Tucson with the
Arizona Wildcats. He's a Pac 10 guy, great recruiter and a player's coach. The
attorney turned football coach just seems to have a problem with brain freeze
when confronted with the smallest of decisions.

7. 5 - 8, 44 yards, 0 touchdowns - that is the 2002 stat line
for, now, Texas starting QB Chance Mock. He was All American in high school
but has not gotten many reps in his three years at Texas. Problem is; he has
no time for growing pains with Arkansas, Kansas State and Oklahoma in the
front half of the 2003 season. I guess the fans can still blame Chris Simms if
things don't go well. 8. At USC, the focus will turn,
initially, from offense to defense but with the weapons on offense, the
Trojans will be just fine. Did I say fine; USC will be very good and at the
top of the food chain in the Pac 10. At least there will be one team in the
Pac 10 that will play serious defense. 9. Good news;
Dennis Francione is one hell of a coach and he will get things turned around
at Texas A & M. Bad news; won't be in 2003. The Aggies are still looking at 3
but possibly 5 hits to the loss column. I'm even excited about the prospects
in the Big 12 South over the next few years. Texas A & M could pitch their
tent in the Top 10 rankings before too long.
Need to get to the Games -- Try our LOW FARE finder and GET THE LOWEST
PRICE on AIRFARE, CAR RENTALS and HOTELS.
10. Wyoming will be the most exciting team with a ton of
loses if the defense cannot shore up the holes. Casey Bramlet and receivers
Ryan McGuffey and Malcolm Floyd will post huge numbers on the offensive side
of the ball. Just wondering if anyone cares... 11.
Kansas State vs. Massachusetts on September 13th gets my vote for the ugly
game of the year. Kansas State's non-conference schedule includes Troy State,
McNeese State (I-AA), and UMass. Pre-season Top 5 and that's all you can give
me. Why don't you throw in the Sister Mary's Fat Farm Powder Puff Team?
12. With five new offensive linemen, David Pollack,
Will Thompson and a very experienced Georgia secondary will carry the Bulldogs
for the first half of the season. No worries Bulldog fans, this team will
still be very good and very well coached. 13. Miami,
Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech will all be undefeated and in the Top 10 on
November first when the 'round robin' between the three teams plays out over
the next five weeks. Doc is likin the Canes again.

Friday Aug. 8th
Tampa +2.5 vs. Miami -2.5 GET THE LIVE NFL LINES NOW!
The Bucs fresh off their preseaon victory in Japan, on Saturday travel back home and then travel across Alligator Alley to take on the Dolphins. The State rivalry in Florida used to be about the fourth most interesting rivalry in the state - behind Noles-Canes, Noles-Gators and Gators-Canes. Suddenly with the Bucs having more playoff appearances in the past 5 years and now a SuperBowl title to go along with that. Looks like the Phishes are taking a back seat to all the bandwagon jumpin Bucs fans in their home state.
(Heck they might even be taking a back seat to those guys from Coral Gables in their own CITY!) I know this it has been a LONG offseason for the Phish. With all sorts of folks around town calling for Wannstedts head, the Phish are PHINALLY ready for PHOOTBALL. The Dolphins have as much talent as anyone, while you could argue as to who has the better defense this wont be the game to prove it. What you will see is a determined Dolphin team going up against a Bucs team who has got to be worn down, from the short week and the travel. Playing at home in front of a potentially hostile crowd - I can assure you that Wannstedt for one will be playing to win. Backup QB Brian Griese will get a good look, and Sage Rosenfels will also.
That and the fact that its completely meaningless means I can Pheel Phine Phor Phostering Phishy Picks!

14. That loud thud that you hear coming from Big 12 country
is the Texas Tech Red Raiders. With quarterback Kliff Kingsbury, DE Aaron Hunt
and LB Lawrence Flugence finishing their eligibility, Head Coach Mike Leach
will be get to prove his theory that recruiting really doesn't matter. It will
be easier to count wins than losses in Lubbock. 15.
Arizona State should have beaten Kansas State in last years Holiday Bowl. The
defense will miss Terrell Suggs but will be stronger on the whole. With no
Washington on the Pac 10 slate, a September 27th date at Oregon State followed
the next week with hosting USC will determine if the Sun Devils can actually
run the table. Look for ASU to finish in the Top 10.
16. Washington has the most lethal pass/catch combination in the nation in
Cody Pickett (4,458 yards and 28 touchdowns) and Reggie Williams (94 catches,
1454 yards and 11 touchdowns - love this guy) but it could be more efficient
now with the inclusion of highly touted freshman receiver Craig Chambers
making his way towards Lake Washington. He should be able to remove some
double coverage from Williams.
17. Virginia Tech RB Kevin Jones will be the Heisman Trophy
front-runner when the 7 - 0 Hokies suit up against Miami (FL) on November 1st.
He will have 1,300 yards with five games to go on the schedule. After that
loss, the race opens up... 18. The comeback player of
the year will be Bernard Berrian, WR, from Fresno State. An All-American while
catching balls from current Houston Texan David Carr in 2001, he missed last
year with injuries but comes back in 2003 and should be back to form and
catching balls from Paul Pinegar. 19. Guy Morris and
the new staff at Baylor will make big improvements in the Bear football
program but the results may not show up in the win column. Being in the
toughest division of the toughest conference in America will make it hard to
get wins in year one. 20. October 11 at the Cotton
Bowl in Dallas might be a game of undefeated teams but it won't come easy.
Texas or Oklahoma could come in with action in the loss column. The biggest
test for Okalahoma will be the traveling headache, Fresno State while Texas
will get a visit from conference foe and Top 5 team, Kansas State.
21. The honeymoon is over and the novelty has waned;
Notre Dame is lacking the talent and the offense to be a big time player this
year. Despite the pressure from ND faithful, this team will struggle because
of a brutal schedule The team may actually have improved from last year, but
not where it counts - the record. Hang tough, Irish.
Ever dreamed about a place on South Beach??
22. The whole Big East should get use to one name, Philip
Goodman. This REALLY talented receiver from Vallejo, CA via Sacramento City
College signed with Oregon out of high school and was recruited and offered in
2003 by Georgia, Arizona State, Oregon and Boise State but for some, yet
unexplained, reason ended up in 'Philly' as a Temple Owl. 23. UCLA took the same gamble that USC did two years ago and hired
someone that most thought to be a bad hire. To USC's credit, they hired a
coach who, at least, had head coaching experience. Karl Dorrell made very few
people smile in the four years he spent as an offensive coordinator at two
schools, Washington and Colorado, before coaching the receivers for the Denver
Broncos. To his credit, he hired a good staff for the Bruins.
24. Willis McGahee who? Frank Gore will make everyone in Coral Gables a
believer once again. If Miami (FL) can pull things together on the defensive
line (they should be able to), the Hurricanes should have little drop-off from
last year and could find themselves in New Orleans.
25. October 11 is going to be the day of the college
football year. LSU vs. Florida, Texas vs. OU, Oklahoma State vs. Kansas State,
Florida State vs. Miami (FL) and Georgia @ Tennessee. Where does ESPN Game Day
go? My guess; the fairgrounds in Dallas, TX, again.
