NFL WEEK 16

SATURDAY DEC 29

Balt. +1.5 @ Tampa Bay -1.5
OVER/UNDER 33.5

This game should be a beauty as both these squads are still fighting to secure a playoff spot. Tampa seems to have found its stride offensively putting up 48 last week, while the Ravens posted thier first shutout. Though that was against Cinci. A determined Tampa Team at home on Prime time is a handful ask the Rams. They are also much more desperate than Balt.

FINAL Tamp 22 - Balt 10 Winner/No Cover

SUNDAY DEC 30

Buff. +6.5 @ NY Jets -6.5
OVER/UNDER 37.5

The Bills have shown that they are a handful, covering the spread in thier past two outings. The Jets under Herman Edwards have a new attitude and have proven that fading in Dec. is a thing of the past. Though Buffalo always plays the Jets well at home the Jets have too much at stake to take even Buffalo lightly. They will lock up a Playoff spot at home.
****************************************
   Jets 27 - Buffalo 17
****************************************
FINAL Buffalo 14 - Jets 9 LOSER

Atlanta +6.5 @ Miami -6.5
OVER/UNDER 38.5

While the Dolphins have stuggled in thier past two outings, they get to come home where they are considerably better especially this time of year. In addition to thier offense finally reaching the endzone in the 4th quarter last week, giving them hope of solidifing a playoff spot of thier own with a win. Which they may struggle but ultimately get against the gamey Falcons.

   Miami 23 - Atl. 17
****************************************
FINAL Miami 21 - Falcons 14 WINNER

Chicago -3.5 @ Detroit +3.5
OVER/UNDER 39.5

A possible trap game for Chicago who has secured a playoff spot against a Detroit team which after finally getting off the schneid got blown out in Pittsburgh. While Chicago may be looking past Detroit at home with points -- the injury to Lions QB McMahon makes it unlikely that Detroit will muster enough offense to pull off the upset. Keep an eye on the injury report in this one. We still like the Bears though.
****************************************
   Chi. 25 - Det. 16
****************************************
FINAL Chi 24 - Det. 0 WINNER

Arizona +1.5 at Carolina -1.5
OVER/UNDER 39.5

Carolinas 6 point loss to the Rams must have impressed some Vegas pundits more so than Arizonas 7 point win at home. While the Panthers impressive performance last week may warrant making them favorites. Arizonas winning 4 out of thier last 6 makes them a far more likely victor than the Panthers who havent done that since summer!
****************************************
    Arizona 23 - Carolina 20
****************************************
FINAL Ariz 30 - Car 7 WINNER

San Fran -5.5 at Dallas +5.5
OVER/UNDER 39.5

The Niners come steamrolling into Dallas with thier Defense looking better and better with each week. After shutting out the Dolphins they follow that up holding Philly to a mere field goal. Dallas doesnt exactly score points in Bunches and despite the spunky defense they have really wont be able to stop Terrell Owens who may be spiking the ball in the Star at Midfield again. Only will Emmett be able to answer against this version of SF Def.... we dont think so.
****************************************
   San Fran. 33 - Dall 17
****************************************
FINAL Dal 27 - SF 21 LOSER

Minnesota at Green Bay NL (-7.5)
OVER/UNDER NL

This line estimat may be a bit underestimated depending on who plays QB for the Vikes. They have basically thrown in the towel this year -- getting blown out at home last week. Going to Green Bay is just not going to help matters -- especially with the 3rd string QB!
****************************************
   G.B. 36 - Minn. 10
****************************************
FINAL GB 24 - Min 13 WINNER

Cleve. +6.5 @ Tenn. -6.5
OVER/UNDER 37.5

An funny thing happened on the way to the (Adelphia) Colosseum. The Titans who were supposed to be playing like this all season have just hit thier stride. Steve McNair is playing well and Eddie George is finally healthy --- the irony is that this comes after they are mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. Despite all this, and my stubborn insistance on picking the Titans throughout the season, the NFL Edge home handicapping Softare (Beta Ver. 2.1) Picked the Browns in the upset, weird huh? Well in this forum I have the ability to override -- unlike the BCS system -- hopefully those of you who may have a copy will also have the common sense to pick the Titans at home.
****************************************
   Tenn. 19 - Cleve. 17
****************************************
FINAL CLE 41 - Tenn 38 COVER

K.C. +3.5 @ Jacks. -3.5
OVER/UNDER 39.5

Here are another couple of too little too late teams, both playing better as of late. Jacks. getting solid defensive play and solid running from Stacey Mack to compliment Mark Brunell. The Chiefs have Preist Holmes clicking as well as finally adjusting to Vermiels offense. The Jags at home should be able to rack up the points against the Chiefs secondary.
****************************************
   Jacks. 34 - KC 20
****************************************
FINAL KC 30 - JAX. 26 LOSER

Indianapolis +13.5 at St. Louis -13.5
OVER/UNDER 59.5

Has any team been hurt more by the loss of one player than the Colts after losing Edgerrin James. Though Roderrick Rhodes has done admirably. Payton is also not having one of his better years. Despite that the Colts can still put up points. This will be a shootout in the St. Louis Dome as Indy will offer little to no resistance on Defense. While this should be a blowout Indy will put up just enough points to cover.
****************************************
   St Louis 37 - Indy 27
****************************************
FINAL StL 42 - Indy 17 Winner/No Cover

Take control of your career at HotJobs.com

Pitts. -7.5 at Cincy +7.5
OVER/UNDER 33.5

Another potential blowout on paper. Cincy has been reeling since thier good start to the season. Getting shut out last week. Though Corey Dillon was the first 100 yard rusher against the Ravens in like 30 games or something. And twice the Bengals turned the ball over deep in scoring range. However that is what losing teams do. Pittsburgh is playing the best football in the AFC, and with a victory lock up home field throughout the playoffs. That should help the Steelers get motivated and avoid the upset.
****************************************
   Pitts 23 - Cin. 10
****************************************
FINAL Cinci 26 - Pitts 23 LOSER

NY Giants +4.5 at Phi. -4.5
OVER/UNDER 34.5

After being left for dead the Giants with two last minute wins in a row have made this a huge game. Philly after getting virtually shut out and being in first place since these two last met suddenly feels NY gaining on them. NY who owned Philly previous to that game can still win the Eastern Division with a victory here and next week and losses by the Eagles here and next week. All that will end in Philly where the Eagles relish winning the Division at home and especially over the Giants who knocked them out of the playoffs last year.
****************************************
   Phi. 20 - NYG 13
****************************************
FINAL Phi 24 - Giants 21 Winner/No Cover

Sea. +1.5 at San Diego -1.5
OVER/UNDER 38.5

Seattle after a slow start had a nice run and is still mathematically alive for a playoff spot. San Diego hasn't won in about 6 weeks, so why would they be favored. Because young teams like the Seahawks can really get affected by big losses and having thier hopes shot then having to play another road game. Also like I have been saying for the last two weeks, ole Doug Flutie still has ONE game left in him...
****************************************
   San Diego 21 - Sea. 20
****************************************
FINAL Sea. 25 - S.D. 22 LOSER

Oakland +1.5 at Denver -1.5
OVER/UNDER NL

The QB situation in Denver is the big question mark in this game. Without knowing who will be playing for Denver its a very difficult game to handicapp. The Raiders have already clinched and seem to have taken thier foot off the gas pedal. Denver who had previously two this year owned Oakland is still formidable up there in Denver. So without knowing the QB situation we turn to our trusty computer program to give us...
****************************************
   Oakl. 23 - Denv. 20
****************************************
FINAL Denver 23 - Oak 14 LOSER

Washington +4.5 at New Orleans -4.5
OVER/UNDER 39.5

THE DR.s PRESCRIPTION

OK, playez, the Doc is back to offer up the last picks of this college football season. It's been a great ride this year. We've got some real good matchups this time around, and I won't even spoil it by going on a tirade about the whole BCS farce again. Without any further delay, here are some college bowl matchups that caught the Doc's eye:

FIESTA BOWL:
Colorado -2.5 vs. Oregon +2.5

This is a grudge match between the two programs that got jilted by the BCS. The Fiesta Bowl will be their battle for second place. Heck, a win by Nebraska in the Rose could propell one of these two teams into a tie for the National Championship. I like the Buffs here, simply because they are playing phenomonal ball right now, and I think the Ducks defense is suspect. Read: Colorado will run all over them. Oregon QB Joey Harrington will have a good day, but not good enough this time.

   Colo. 28 - Oregon 23

I will tell you why youre WRONG!

Orange Bowl:
Fla -15.5 v. Maryld +15.5

Give props to Maryland Coach Ralph "the Fridge" for doing an excellent job with the Terrapins this season. But please, with Ernest Graham healthy, the Gators are simply too good. They have weapons all over the field, and Grossman can get the ball downfield in a hurry. To add further, the game is in Florida - this one will feel like a homer for the Gators. Simply put the Doc likes the Gators big.

   Fla. 41 - Marylnd 17

Independence Bowl:
Iowa State +7.5 v. Alabama -7.5

The Crimson Tide is a storied football program in the midst of some tough times and scandal. With NCAA violations looming large, and rumors of Coach Dennis Franchione looking to bail after just one season, this is a distracted team. I see Iowa State as a team hungry for a bowl win, and Bama as a team that isn't accustomed to getting up for the Independence Bowl in lovely Shrevport, LA. Look for the hungrier team to win this one. Senaca Wallace has been the man for the Cyclones all year, and I like him to lead Iowa State to victory and in the process get a fat raise for coach Dan McCarney.
****************************************
   Iowa St. 24 - Alabama 23
****************************************
FINAL Bama 14 - Ia. St. 13 COVER

Citrus Bowl:
Florida State +1.5 v. Virgina Tech -1.5

Although Florida State QB Chris Rix has shown signs of becoming a great leader for Saint Bobby, I like the stout Tech defense to control the tempo of this game. They shceme and they blitz and can cause chaos to opposing offenses. On the other side of the ball, the Hokies have had trouble finding an offensive rhythm this season. I still see the Hokies doing just enough to win this one. Defense, special teams, and maybe a turnover or two will add up to success for Beamer's troops.

   Virgina Tech 27 - Florida St. 17

Oh the "National Championship", yeah, I almost forgot -- Miami will win, but it will be a tough game. The Huskers are a proud team that is pissed off about all the "you don't belong" talk going around. That tends to motivate a team especially the caliber of a Nebraska. They will make this one interesting, but Miami's awesome overall talent will win out. The Canes win by 10!

That's it, folks. It's been a fun year. Its now time for the Doc to head into the offseason. You can be sure that when they get ready to kick it off next year the Doc will be right back here at www.TheNFLedge.com with my fearless Pre-Season picks and of course my select NCAA Game previews throughout the season! Happy and safe Holidays to all. The Doc is out!
