NFL WEEK 7!

THURSDAY NIGHT!
Indianapolis -3.5 @ Kansas City +3.5

OVER/UNDER 47.5

While this looked to be a slugfest of big time contenders in the preseason, these teams post a combined 4 - 7 mark. While KC's season is in the tank, we STILL feel they are a better team than what they've shown. While Indy swallows two major league whippings by N.E. winning tough road games is what teams with playoff aspirations do. While KC can only talk playoffs in terms of 'next year' they will no doubt be fired up for a prime time home game. That alone would be reason enough, but Indys defense has also really struggled, is KC good enough to put the Colts away though, the Answer is.... NO!

FINAL Indy 35 - KC 27 Winner/No Cov.

Sundays Games

NY Jets -3.5 @ Carolina +3.5
OVER/UNDER 39.5

The Jets were embarassed by the Rams at home, as the Rams can and often do. While Carolina was equally humiliated by the previously winless 'skins. The Jets too much offensive talent and SHOULD win this game. Alas these are the Jets and winning the first half is usually good enough -- except against Miami. Chris Wenke will shake off his 4 INTs against the Skins and will hit Wesley Walls as time runs out, grounding the Jets.
****************************************
   Carolina 20 - Jets 14
****************************************
FINAL Jets 13 - Car 12 COVER

New Orleans +13.5 @ St. Louis -13.5
OVER/UNDER 49.5

So impressive were the Rams in New York that even the two touchdown line looks like a bargain. Well beware the Saints -- even though getting upset by Atlanta, they were looking forward to this one for a while. Brooks, Williams and Co. will give the Rams Defense more of a challenge this week, and the Saints Defense will keep the game close. The Rams will win --- maybe -- but it will not be a rout.
****************************************
    Rams 24 - N.O. 13
****************************************
FINAL NO 34 - Rams 31 COVER

San Fran +3.5 @ Chicago -3.5
OVER/UNDER 40.5

WOW a battle of 4 - 1 titans -- now this would make a nice prime time match up -- although cant blame abc for not locking this one down. The Bears and thier resurrgent Defense have been shutting down everyone, posting a shut out last week. the Niners are a tremendous sleeper and will challenge the Bears all day. Ultimately the test will be the 49ers young Defense against the Bears newfound 'A-Train' express running game and while I'm still on the Bear-wagon, I ain't jumping totally off the Gold Rush!
****************************************
    Chi 17 - S.F. 14
****************************************
FINAL Chi 37 - SF 31 WINNER/No COVER

Cincinnati +2.5 @ Detroit -2.5
OVER/UNDER 40.5

Finally it looks as though the Lions have things going for them. Charlie Batch threw for over 300 yards last week. Their specials were menacing, and they played well defensively. They still lost! Everyone is looking for them to get off the Schneid this week against the Bengals who were shut out by the Bears last week. Well almost everyone, I doubt Corey Dillon and John Kitna do either! Remember who told you so...
****************************************
    Bengals 27 - Det. 20
****************************************
FINAL CIN 31 - Det 27 WINNER

Jacksonville +8.5 @ Baltimore -8.5
OVER/UNDER 33.5

Hard to imagine Jacksonville getting any worse than losing at home to previously winless Buffalo. Baltimore is also reeling after losing two in a row. The home cooking and prospects of not facing Tony Boselli and Fred Taylor are definately in thier favor, however I am still not sold on the Ravens offense covering nine points -- not unless they K.O. Jags QB Mark Brunell.
****************************************
    Ravens 19 - Jacks. 16
****************************************
FINAL Balt 18 - Jacks 17 WINNER

Minnesota +2.5 @ Tampa Bay -2.5
OVER/UNDER 38.5

Not only was Tampa beaten silly last week, but they were insulted and insulted badly afterward. This is a big game for them, actually more of a must win. Similarly it is also a must win for Minnesota to get back into the race. The problem for Minnesota is that thier running game is also theyre QB and the more hits Culpeper takes the more likely he is to falter with the game on the line. Tampa will get after him this week and could exploit the Viking defense for a big day offensively, but somehow I cant see a Tony Dungee team lighting anyone up.
****************************************
   Minn. 31 - Tampa 16
****************************************
FINAL Tampa 41 - MIN 14 LOSER

Arizona -2.5 @ Dallas +2.5
OVER/UNDER 8.5

Despite all the disrespect the edge has paid to the Cardinals they really have been playing surprisingly well! T Leonard Davis has been intimidating blitzers with his savage blocking that teams are just not blitzing Plummer and he's coming around. Sure we could talk about the fast young Dallas D, and Emmitt and all, and this is a game Dallas should win, but if the Cardinal Defense can keep Dallas in check, I have a hunch Plummer is going to do that 4th quarter thing again.
****************************************
   Ariz. 17 - Dallas 15
****************************************
FINAL Dal 17 - Ariz 3 COVER

NY Giants -7.5 @ Washington +7.5
OVER/UNDER 34.5

The G-men are now officially reeling after yet another crushing 1pt loss. Their offense was dreadful, and while thier last win was against these same Redskins, they also struggled in that game with Jason Sehorns INT bailing them out late in that game. Conversely the Skins finally got off the (Dan) Schnied and won vs. Carolina and if you count thier "cover" against dallas 2 weeks ago they are on a 2 game streak. Thier Defense will contain the Giant offense, and Banks looks like he is on the same page as his recievers, while he's no McNabb, the G-men cant put teams away and will allow the Skins to hang around enough that they will pull the upset!
****************************************
   Wash. 16 - Giants 14
****************************************
FINAL WAS 35 - NYG 21 WINNER

Miami -1.5 @ Seattle +1.5
OVER/UNDER 36.5

So whats Seattle thinking - after not being able to BUY a TD in the early part of the season, the insert Shaun Alexander at RB and Trent Dilfer at QB and become a juggernaut hanging 34 pts on Denver. Oh but the reward for Dilfer who has won all 13 of his last 13 starts is to put him on the Bench, and bring back Hasselbeck. Well in the 1980's Buddy Ryan released WR Chris Carter because "all he does is catch TD passes" and last year Baltimore released Trent Dilfer who "just wins" (superbowls included) looks like Mike Holmgren really doesnt want to win this week. And if fortune has it Dilfer will get released soon, and might even get picked up by the Raiders since Al Davis likes that sort of thing, oh yeah and its homecoming for Lamar Smith in a way!
****************************************
   Miami 24 - Seattle 13
****************************************
FINAL Mia 24 - Sea 20 WINNER

Buffalo +7.5 @ San Diego -7.5
OVER/UNDER 37.5

Another homecoming of sorts -- Doug Flutie another QB who "just wins" against the team that did like that sort of thing, Buffalo. Well Buffalo finally got one last week, do you really think they want to do that again?? Flutie has some Bills to pay!
****************************************
   S.D. 30 - Buf 10
****************************************
FINAL S.D. 27 - Buf 24 WINNER/No COVER

New England +9.5 @ Denver -9.5
OVER/UNDER 43.5

Another week another big point spread for N.E. do people not understand the Tom Brady is a good QB. Do people not understand that Antwain Smith is a good RB, did people not see David "the General" Patten, throw catch and run in for TDs. Oh yeah Bill Bellichek is Defensive wizard too. Ah, but they are in Denver, I see.... altitude!
****************************************
   Denver 24 - N.E. 17
****************************************
FINAL Denv 31 - NE 20 WINNER/No COVER

Oakland +1.5 @ Philly -1.5
OVER/UNDER 38.5

Just cause Philly beat the Giants does not put them in the superbowl. Remember folks the Giants pushed them around for 58 minutes. The Raiders are no stranger to winning on the road and feature more firepower than NY did, so what I am saying is that the points are nice, but it wont come down to that.

THE DR.s PRESCRIPTION

For College Fans!

I was asked last week to provide a top ten list, and so after some careful thought, I've decided to add my list to the several dozen that already exist. I based mine on performance on the field, taking into consideration the quality of opponents. Here goes:

THE DOCS TOP 10

  • 1. Oklahoma (7-0)
  • 2. UCLA (7-0)
  • 3. Miami (5-0)
  • 4. Nebraska (8-0)
  • 5. Va Tech (6-0)
  • 6. Florida(6-1)
  • 7. Texas (6-1)
  • 8. Tennessee (4-1)
  • 9. Washington (5-1)
  • 10. Michigan (5-1)
  • I will say it again, this list is based on on-field performance. Doesn't mean the Doc won't pick, say, a number 4 team to beat a number 1 team....

That being said, lets move on to this week's picks. Tons of great matchups throughout the country - especially that barnburner down in Lincoln. Here's the Doc's view on how some of these games will go down:

Take control of your career at HotJobs.com

    Oklahoma +3.5 at Nebraska -3.5

These are two top notch defenses going at it. I love Bob Stoops' defense, and they have proven that they can win a big game away from home already this year. The only problem is that this one is in Lincoln, where the Cornhuskers just don't lose. Although I would rank Nebraska's D just a notch below the one from Norman, they are quite capable of giving fits to the OU offense. Bottom line is, I love Tim Crouch at home. The kid is a winner all the way. Four point spread is a big one, though.
    ****************************************
       Huskers 22 - Okla 20
    ****************************************
    FINAL Neb 20 - OU 10 WINNER/No Cov

South Carolina +7.5 at Tennessee -7.5

Lou Holtz is going to try to do something that the Cocks have never been able to do: win at Nehlan Stadium. Yeah, this is one of the toughest places to play in college football, but the Vols have been beaten here. Lou's teams are always tough on the road, and he'll have them believing. Still, I like Casey Clausen and Travis Stephens to get the job done. Cocks might be in for a repeat of last year's 0-fer finish with a game left against Florida.
    ****************************************
       Vols 27 - S. Car 23
    ****************************************
    FINAL Tenn 17 - S. Car 10 WINNER

    UCLA -7.5 at Stanford +7.5

The Doc loves the Bruins here. A tough road game for sure, but I think Stanford is ripe for a letdown after a huge win against Oregon last week. Although UCLA has broken my heart in seasons past, I think things are different now. Their D is solid, and the offense is dynamic. Don't be afraid to lay the points.
    ****************************************
       UCLA 34 - Stan. 21
    ****************************************
    FINAL Stan 38 - UCLA 28 LOSER

    Iowa State +6.5 at Texas A&M -6.5

The Doc has been very high on this Cyclone team this year, but they are really going to have to step it up to beat the Aggies at College Station. Although RC Slocum is an extremely conservative, play-not-to-lose good ol boy, I'll admit that his team plays awesome for him at home. Iowa State will need to hang around until the fourth quarter and try to steal one. I'm not betting on it, and neither should you.
    ****************************************
       A&M 34 - Iowa St. 17
    ****************************************
    FINAL A&M 24 - Ia St. 21 WINNER/No Cov.

    The Drs. 2001 - record
    THIS WEEK:
        Winners 3 - 1
        A.T.S. 1 - 3
    SEASON: Winners 22 - 11
    A.T.S. 17 - 16

OK, folks. Although the Doctor doesn't believe in all the early Heisman hype, I think it's about time to start looking at the players that are starting to move to the forefront in the race for the coolest looking trophy in all of sports. Here are my frontrunners, based on on-field performance while also acknowledging the hype machine that the media has created:

    1. Ken Dorsey, QB, Miami: Dorsey is a flat-out stud and he plays the position that the Downtown Athletic Club loves to give the hardware to. He dismantled Florida State last week, which won't hurt. Plus, he looks good. Face it, that matters.

    2. DeShaun Foster, RB, UCLA: Foster really burst on the scene last week in a huge win over Washington. His 301 yards rushing got a lot of peoples attention and was one of the best games by a RB in years, erasing Theotis Brown's UCLA record! It helps greatly that UCLA hasn't lost.

    3. Woodrow Dantzler, QB, Clemson: I love this guy. He can beat a team so many ways, and has that Jordanesque quality of single-handedly beating a team. He ran and threw for six TD's last week, and is the one guy on the list that is really rising on people's lists.

    4. Joey Harrington, QB, Oregon: The huge poster in Times Square was a marketing coup. This guy can back up the hype with a big arm and great field vision. If the Ducks lose, he is out of it.

    5. David Carr, QB, Fresno State: I love him because he comes from a program that got absolutely no hype, and he has earned all his accolades on the field. Again, if they lose, he will drop out of sight. We'll have to wait and see how this plays out.
If ya'll have some thoughts on your Heisman favorite, post it in the FORUM and I'll tell you why you're wrong! It's great to be the Doc.
