THURSDAY NIGHT!
Buffalo +8.5 @ Jacksonville -8.5
OVER/UNDER 38.5
This should be an entertaining game, the hapless Bills racked with injuries visit the Wounded Jaguar!
The Jags just arent the same without RB Fred Taylor. The Bills refuse to admit they pinned thier future on grossly overrated Rob Johnson.
I mean as if the Flutie controversy wasnt enough QB Van Pelt comes off the Bench and leads the Bills to 36 POINTS!!
If they play him they could have a shot to cover the spread. Alas the word out of Buffalo is the same as it was last year,
Johnson is our QB! Therefore this pick is nice and easy, even without Taylor, Brunell to McCardell and Smith will be more than enough!
****************************************
Jacks. 27 - Buffalo 13
****************************************
FINAL Bills 13 - Jags 10 LOSER
New England +9.5 @ Indianapolis -9.5
OVER/UNDER 47.5
This will be an interesting game for sure, The line opened up with Indy favored by 13 1/2 and immediately started
dropping. After N.E. Embarassed Indy up in N.E. a couple weeks ago as well as New England improved play,
they are getting heavy action. This doesn't faze me at all, Indy will rebound and set things straight with NE.
The Edge sez the Edge will run wild!
****************************************
Indy 37 - NE 17
****************************************
FINAL NE 38 - Indy 17 LOSER
St. Louis -6.5 @ NY Jets +6.5
OVER/UNDER 45.5
The Jets will be the fortunate recipients of the Giants misfortune.
The G-men physically pounded the Rams last week only to come up short. The Jets will have the advantage of tangling with a wounded Ram,
possibly without the Marshall. Somehow the Jets have found thier way to first place by beating thier whipping boy Miami and some other ugly stepchildren from thier division.
Unlike the G-men the Jets have no Micheal Strahan to punish Warner and for that they will pay.
****************************************
Rams 30 - Jets 16
****************************************
FINAL Rams 34 - Jets 14 WINNER
Atlanta +7.5 @ New Orleans -7.5
OVER/UNDER 40.5
Atlanta surprised me with the game they gave San Fran last week but losing in such hearbreaking fasion at home tends to have carry over effects,
as does winning the way N'Oleans did in Carolina. They will be fired up and confident, and besided Chris Chandler is about due for his annual concussion layoff.
The Saints defense will see to that.
****************************************
Saints 24 - Atl. 10
****************************************
FINAL Atl 20 - NO 13 LOSER
Carolina -2.5 @ Washington +2.5
OVER/UNDER NL
How much lower can the Redskins sink. Eventually the law of averages will catch up and they will win a game.
Well true to our prediction here QB Banks could not lead the Skins to victory last week and he surely wont this week either.
Wenke has been improving steadily each game and is reading defenses like a vet. The skins wounded more than thier pride last week and injuries are mounting as quickly as losses,
which is what this will wind up being as well.
****************************************
Carolina 20 - Was. 9
****************************************
FINAL WAS 17 - CAR 14 LOSER
Baltimore -5.5 @ Cleve. +5.5
OVER/UNDER NL
Cleveland has had a nice run and this line has been up and down pending who will be QB for the Ravens. Personally I like backup Randall Cunningham at the helm just as well.
While Cleveland has pulled a upsets thus far even at home this will be a tall order against a Raven team that was pushed around by the Pack last week.
****************************************
Balt. 20 - Cleve. 6
****************************************
FINAL Cle 24 - Balt 14 LOSER
Pittsburgh +4.5 @ Tampa Bay -4.5
OVER/UNDER 32.5
Pittsburgh is also a surprising team, posting a 3-1 and leading the AFC central.
Tampa has been a slight disappointment, especially offensively. Under Head Coach Tony Dungee what else is new.
Taking Pitt with thier stingy defense may be a good bet. Although Tampa isn't nearly as bad as thier record and Pitt. with Kordell isnt nearly as good as thiers.
This week we will have a better idea of the real Steelers and Bucs.
****************************************
Tampa 31 - Pitts. 17
****************************************
FINAL Pitts 17 - Tampa 10 LOSER
|
|
Chicago @ Cinci. Pickem
OVER/UNDER 32.5
A tough game for me as both of these teams have been kind to the edge during these last few rough weeks. Cinci is usually very good at home and The edge's sleeper in the AFC Central.
The Bears have equally been ferocious defensively and have really turned my opinion about them. They settled the QB question releasing Shane Matthews and handing the Baton to Jim Miller.
Remember the edge sez that when he plays its Miller Time for the Bears. When in doubt, put it on the D!
****************************************
Da' Bears 17 - Cinci 13
****************************************
FINAL Bears 24 - Cinci 0 WINNER
Tenn. -5.5 @ Detroit +5.5
OVER/UNDER 37.5
The Titans finally broke through with a hard fought win last week. While the Lions finally started to score with QB Batch back at the helm. While it's a good sign for the Lions the Titans have a much better defense
than the Vikes and will be enough to get them thier second win, while Detroit can take solace again to know that they might make a game of it!
****************************************
Tenn. 23 - Det. 14
****************************************
FINAL Tenn 27 - Det 24 Winner/No Cover
Denver @ San Diego NL(+1.5)
OVER/UNDER NL
Most books arent even taking action on this game. All things considered Denver should be a 1.5 pt fav.
The question is regarding QB Brian Griese status and it looks as though he will be playing. With or without him Denver has struggled a bit as of late,
and while my man Douggie hasn't worked the magic in a couple of weeks we're still not off the wagon, though I guess I would prefer a couple more points here!
****************************************
Denver 24 - S.D. 23
****************************************
FINAL SD 27 - Den 10 COVER
Kansas City -1.5 @ Arizona +1.5
OVER/UNDER 40.5
Boy have I been wrong about K.C. thus far. I know many of you are saying that is par for The Edge this season,
but things are bound to turn around and turn around soon. A visit to Arizona means that battling the weather will be more difficult than battling the birds.
Preist Holmes will have a big game and get KC and the edge back in the right direction.
****************************************
K.C. 31 - Ariz 19
****************************************
FINAL Az 24 - KC 16 LOSER
Green Bay -2.5 @ Minn. +2.5
OVER/UNDER 46.5
We make no doubt about our appreciation of Green Bay and QB Brett Farve. Even though they are in Minnesota, and favored,
the days of Randy Moss tormenting the Pack are long gone, instead Farve and RB Ahman Green will slice and dice the Vike Defense to ribbons.
Culpepper, Moss and Carter will do their thing but will it be scoring or bickering??
****************************************
G.B. 45 - Minn 30
****************************************
FINAL Minn 35 - GB 13 LOSER
Phila +2.5 @ NY Giants -2.5
OVER/UNDER 34.5
FINAL Eagles 10 - Gints 9 WINNER

For College Fans!
After glancing at this week's matchups, it was pretty clear that there weren't nearly as many big games as in recent weeks. There are, however, some interesting matchups, and that is what I am going to focus on for this week's picks:
USC +1.5 at Notre Dame -1.5
Wow, I can remember when this rivalry pitted two top
flight teams against each other, with every game carrying national
implications. Bob Davie and Mike Garrett have taken care of that. It will
still be big for the guys on the field, and should be a great game. As usual,
it's USC's speed vs. Notre Dame's power. I'll take the power this time, with
ND grinding out a home win.
****************************************
ND 24 - USC 21
****************************************
FINAL ND 27 - USC 16 WINNER
North Carolina +5.5 at Clemson -5.5
Carolina coach John Bunting has shown the country
that he wasn't kidding when he said that he was trying to get the Tarheel
state to take football seriously. He will be tested as he brings his squad
into Death Valley to play Clemson. The Tigers are led, of course, by QB
Woodrow Dantzler, a threat running or throwing the ball. I like Clemson to
win big here and push for the league crown.
****************************************
Clemson 34 - UNC 20
****************************************
FINAL UNC 38 - Clemson 3 LOSER

Colorado +9.5 at Texas-9.5
This should be a great game. Colorado has been playing
great under Gary Barnett, and Texas really wants to win a big game after all
the talk about Mac Brown's inability to do so. The Buffs will try to win
with the power running of Chris Brown and a tough defense. I think they're
in for a tough day, however, as Texas' D proves too much for them to handle.
Simms will play well and get Texas in the end zone enough to win.
****************************************
Texas 29 - Colo. 14
****************************************
FINAL Texas 41 - Col 7 WINNER
Wiconsin +5.5 at Illinois -5.5
I really liked Illinois before the season started,
and despite getting hammered by Michigan, I am impressed that the Illini have
kept things together. Wisconsin has been up and down, losing some tough
games, but playing sloppy in others. In general, Big 10 games are tough to
call, and this one is no different. I'm going with the road dog on this one,
if only because I am starting to have faith in the unpredicability of this
league. Plus, I think Wisconsin is feeling their mojo after an impressive
win against Ohio State. Oh yeah it doesn't hurt that under Coach Alvarez the Badgers are 12 - 5 on the road in the Big Ten.
****************************************
Wisc. 28 - Ill. 24
****************************************
FINAL Ill 42 - Wisc 35 LOSER

THIS WEEK:

A.T.S. 2 - 2
SEASON: Winners 19 - 10

OK, folks. Although the Doctor doesn't believe in all the early Heisman hype, I think it's about time to start looking at the players that are starting to move to the forefront in the race for the coolest looking trophy in all of sports. Here are my frontrunners, based on on-field performance while also acknowledging the hype machine that the media has created:
1. Ken Dorsey, QB, Miami: Dorsey is a flat-out stud and he plays the position that the Downtown Athletic Club loves to give the hardware to. He dismantled Florida State last week, which won't hurt. Plus, he looks good. Face it, that matters.
2. DeShaun Foster, RB, UCLA: Foster really burst on the scene last week in a huge win over Washington. His 301 yards rushing got a lot of peoples attention and was one of the best games by a RB in years, erasing Theotis Brown's UCLA record! It helps greatly that UCLA hasn't lost.
3. Woodrow Dantzler, QB, Clemson: I love this guy. He can beat a team so many ways, and has that Jordanesque quality of single-handedly beating a team. He ran and threw for six TD's last week, and is the one guy on the list that is really rising on people's lists.
4. Joey Harrington, QB, Oregon: The huge poster in Times Square was a marketing coup. This guy can back up the hype with a big arm and great field vision. If the Ducks lose, he is out of it.
5. David Carr, QB, Fresno State: I love him because he comes from a program
that got absolutely no hype, and he has earned all his accolades on the field.
Again, if they lose, he will drop out of sight.
We'll have to wait and see how this plays out.
If ya'll have some thoughts on your Heisman favorite,
post it in
the FORUM and I'll tell you why you're wrong!
It's great to be the Doc.
