The NFL PICKS:
|
|
|
SORRY ABOUT BEING LATE FOLKS ITS BEEN A CRAZY WEEK!!
Besides this being the fourth preseason week, no team is going to risk anyone gettng hurt going into opening week.
So only the back ups and bubble guys will see signifigant action making this the most difficult week to handicap.
That fact alone is worthy of a pick, stay away from games this weekend since the outcomes of all these games will be decided by guys who will be bagging groceries on opening weekend.
Oh whats that you still want a pick?
OK, OK but JUST ONE!!
Cleveland +2.5 @ Carolina -2.5
OVER/UNDER 33.5
Well this game figures to be a test of endurance -- for the fans anyway. Who can stand to watch this?
I dont care much for either team, but since Carolina is starting rookie QB Chris Wenke, they figure to give him a nice long look to prepare for starting next week.
Cleveland who is pretty thin on talent anyway is as thin on depth too. Figure that for a mismatch to favor Carolina.0

HOW DID YOU DO??
Right! I thought so.
We'll SEE YOU BACK HERE NEXT WEEK!!

College Fans! Since last week was just a burp in the schedule created by Schools looking to pick up an EXTRA few hundred grand for their respective programs, the Doctor had to beg out of the whole messy affair. This week, the season opens for real, and after careful consideration I offer the following commentary on some of the marquee matchups:

Syracuse +14.5 at Tennessee -14.5
OVER/UNDER 45.5
I really like the Volunteers in their home opener here.
I know, last week we all saw how the defenses tended to be
ahead of the offenses and the scores were down,
but I am not impressed with the 'Cuse.
They will not find their misplaced offense in Knoxville this Saturday.
Tennessee's defense will swarm the Orangemen and keep them from putting up points.
Casey Clausen and Travis Henry will account for just enough O to cover the spread.

Tenn. 34 - SU 10

FINAL Tenn 33 - SU 9 WINNER

#2 Miami (FL) -13.5 At Penn St +13.5
OVER/UNDER 47.5
I can't believe I'm saying this about a Penn State team, but on paper, they are considerably overmatched here.
The program is reeling after a dismal 2000 season, but will be jacked up for Adam Taliaffero leading the team out of the tunnel
to kick off this season. They have always played very well at home, and they always manage to have a good defense.
The intangibles of this game favor Penn State, and I for one am not willing to bury JoPa just yet.
State will cover the spread and could pull the upset if they jump out on top early and Miami starts pressing and making mistakes.

Wisconsin +10.5 at Oregon -10.5
OVER/UNDER 48.5
I was at the Wisconsin game last weekend, and I must say they looked very ordinary.
The offense was bland and the defense was tough.
Wait a minute, that is how Barry Alvarez' teams always are.
The whole state of Oregon is jacked up for Joey Harrington's debut,
and the crowd will be a factor if the Ducks jump up early.
I like the Badgers, who learned last week that their bread and butter
will always be power football, to stick close in this one
behind the running of Anthony Davis and its stout defense.
Ducks will win a close one here.

Oregon 26 - Wis 17

FINAL Ore 31 - Wisc 28 WINNER

UCLA +2.5 at Alabama-2.5
OVER/UNDER 50.5
Forget last season. These are two very talented programs
looking to put an end to nightmare seasons.
I love Dennis Franchione,
and I think his squad will be much better than last season.
There is loads of talent in Tuscaloosa, and he will make the most of it.
UCLA brings it's high wire offense on the road, and I predict that Corey Paus
will find it hard to get into gear so far away from sunny California.
Take the Tide at home.
